MONDAY TELEMETRY For July 27th, 2009

Welcome to another installment of Monday Telemetry, a weekly blog from The Launchpad that covers some of the more interesting releases or events that are coming to the store in the coming week.

BLACKEST NIGHT TALES OF THE CORPS #3
In this 3-issue miniseries, writers Geoff Johns and Peter J. Tomasi (GREEN LANTERN CORPS) reveal the secrets behind the Lanterns of BLACKEST NIGHT! Bear witness to Blue Lantern Saint Walker's pilgrimage of hope, Star Sapphire Carol Ferris' sacrifice for love, Green Lantern Kilowog's courageous beginnings, Red Lantern Vice's source of rage, Orange Lantern Blume's bizarre creation, and the first appearance of the mysterious Indigo, leader of the Indigo Tribe!

A whole bunch of Dark Reign titles...

DARK REIGN GOBLIN LEGACY
Before he was the ultimate power broker in the Marvel Universe, Norman Osborn was better known as the Green Goblin - the insane arch nemesis of everyone's friendly neighborhood Spider-Man! Now, experience an early turning point in the ongoing war between the wall-crawler and his glider-riding rival - the unmasking of Norman Osborn from AMAZING SPIDER-MAN #39-40 (1966) - like you've never seen it before, fully remastered with modern coloring. Also featuring an all-new framing sequence and a Saga-style recap of the complete history of the Green Goblin!

DARK REIGN HAWKEYE #4
From the pages of DARK AVENGERS! As Ben Urich learns the awful truth about the terrorist cell operating in New York City, Hawkeye finally confronts the mysterious antagonist who's been haunting his dreams. But is he just a figment of Bullseye's diseased imagination? And if so, where the hell did all these dead bodies come from? You want some wicked Dark Reign fun? The dastardly duo of Andy Diggle (THUNDERBOLTS) and Tom Raney (SECRET INVASION: INHUMANS) hit the mark!

DARK REIGN HOOD #3
From the pages of NEW AVENGERS and DARK REIGN: THE CABAL! An insider to the occult underworld gives The Hood the lowdown on the dread Dormammu, the power behind his power! Can Parker Robbins possibly break the hold this infamous entity has on him-and will he even want to when he sees some of the benefits of giving into it? While his inner struggle dominates his attention, a vicious foe from The Hood's past regroups for a final showdown!

DARK REIGN LETHAL LEGION #2
Put up your dukes as Wonder Man joins the fight...or is that starts one? Find out what was big enough to bring heroes and villains together, who thinks they're powerful enough to bring down Norman Osborn! The mystery unravels as the Lethal Legion gets closer to finding the traitor in their midst and it's every man for himself!

DARK REIGN SINISTER SPIDER-MAN #2
The name's Mac Gargan, and the whole city of New York thinks I'm Spider-Man. They love me and I can do anything I like. What I like is making J. Jonah Jameson's life a living hell. Well, that... and eating people. But that seems to have ticked off some folks. Turns out even super-powered criminals have feelings, and they've all teamed up with this nutjob scientist named The Redeemer to kill me. Also, who the heck is THE HIPPO?

DARK REIGN YOUNG AVENGERS #3
Norman Osborn was sent to test the Marvel Universe, and now he's testing the Young Avengers, both wannabees and established, by sending his best and brightest against them, to show them that no good deed goes unpunished, and no bad deed unrewarded. And that dear old lady is still dead. And those tattoos indicate fascism. And the deeper the Young Avengers look into the group that would be them, the deeper that group looks back.

JUSTICE LEAGUE OF AMERICA #35
The cards are stacked against the remnants of the Justice League! And those cards are the Royal Flush Gang! Can even Superman and Wonder Woman save a team whose luck has run out? Featuring the deadly return of an old foe.

JUSTICE SOCIETY OF AMERICA #29
A new era begins for the Justice Society of America as writers Bill Willingham (FABLES) and Matthew Sturges (BLUE BEETLE) take over the series with new artist Jesus Merino (SUPERMAN ANNUAL) just as two new recruits make their debut with the team! Strange happenings at the JSA Mansion are weird precursors to an all-out attack on all members of the team - all but one! And what is the strange connection that new members King Chimera and All-American Kid might have with the turmoil?

ULTIMATUM #5 (OF 5)
Is this what the end of the world looks like? You better believe it!! As only Emmy & Eisner award-winning writer Jeph Loeb and superstar artist David Finch can deliver, it's an apocalyptic conclusion where every, and we mean EVERY, score is settled! The Ultimate heroes have faced their final judgment...and when the dust settles will they be found wanting? If you can handle the growing body count, stick around as ALL is answered in this explosive series finale that will shock fans for years to come!

Whiteout Movie Trailer

IGN has the new trailer for Whiteout. Based on a Greg Rucka graphic novel. The comics-to-film machine continues to churn them out.

7/24/2009

Jonah Hex Poster

Not really digging this poster. I still have high hopes for Josh Brolin as the scarred (inside and out) gunslinger. The poster almost seems like its trying to hide the fact that this is a western.
Due in theaters on June 18, 2010 and based on the graphic novel, Jonah Hex follows a disfigured bounty hunter who tracks a voodoo practitioner hell-bent on releasing an army of the undead. Josh Brolin, John Malkovich, Megan Fox, Will Arnett and Michael Shannon star.
Okay. Maybe some zombies... I was hoping it would hew closer to the current comic series, but this could be cool.

Marvelman at Marvel

Looks like the rights to Marvelman (a.k.a Miracleman) have been secured by Marvel following a process that began back in '07. I noticed the above Quesada poster was quietly solicited recently. For more details check out the "Cup O Joe" at CBR.

Hopefully this means Alan Moore's superlative Marvel/Miracleman story will return to print.

Comic-con PSPs

This is neat and all, but its a tenuous link. I don't plan on watching First Flight on a PSP, that's for sure. More comics at comic-con, please.

Mass Effect Comic

We're all big fans of the Mass Effect game here at The Launchpad. So we were really happy to see that Dark Horse is making a Mass Effect comic that will bridge the gap between the first and second game.

DC Movies

Cinematical has an interesting rundown of upcoming and possible DC movies.

Including a "sequel to Constantine, a solo Green Arrow movie, the Green Arrow prison lark, Supermax, and still-alive Shazam.

Used RPGs

We just got a fresh influx of used RPGs, mainly White Wolf stuff (alot of Mage, Wraith, and some Werewolf and Vampire). A couple other little odds and ends. Check it out if you're looking for some inexpensive RPG books.

MONDAY TELEMETRY For July 20th, 2009

Welcome to another installment of Monday Telemetry, a weekly blog from The Launchpad that covers some of the more interesting releases or events that are coming to the store in the coming week.

It's a big week...

NOTABLE RELEASES THIS WEEK (click on images for larger version)

AMAZING SPIDER-MAN #600
The greatest Marvel super hero of all celebrates his 600th issue with the biggest all-original issue of Amazing Spider-Man EVER! This one's got it all! The return of Doctor Octopus, Daredevil, a wedding you never predicted, and the return of one of the most important people in Peter Parker's life in a giant-sized lead story by Dan Slott and John Romita Jr. Doc's back in town, but it's only a prelude to darker days ahead as Spidey unknowingly prepares for a gauntlet he can't even see coming.

On top of all that, witness the return of one of Spider-man's creators, Smilin' Stan Lee (along with Masticatin' Marcos Martin) as he presents a story of unbridled passion, drama and angst as Spidey reflects over his many, many years of adventures.

But that ain't all...as the rest of the Spidey Web-Heads bring you several short features showcasing some rarely explored aspects of both Spidey and Pete's life, drawn by some of the greatest artists in comics. Plus, several other surprises and NO REPRINTS! 104 pages of goodness brought to you by some of the best creators that have ever worked on Spidey!

No renumbering necessary here. Quite a milestone.

CYBERFORCE HUNTER KILLER #1
The Hunter-Killer team's directive to hunt down and detain rogue Ultra-Sapiens brings them head to head with the Cyberforce team in a brutal showdown that leaves more than one member bleeding. But who is manipulating these two teams into conflict and to what end?

The team of writer and Hunter-Killer co-creator Mark Waid (Amazing Spider-Man, Irredeemable) and artist Kenneth Rocafort (Astonishing Tales, Madame Mirage) bring you a crossover filled with epic action, intrigue, lies, and betrayal. Featuring two connected covers by series artist Rocafort and a third variant cover by Mike Choi and Sonia Oback (Uncanny X-Men, X-Force).

DELLEC #1
His name is DELLEC, and it all starts right here!

One man amidst a blur of immorality, but his mission is clear-destroy the forces of evil wherever they may flourish, even if it means taking on the very being that created mankind itself! The action-packed first issue takes off full throttle, as DELLEC, on a quest for vengeance and redemption, jumps headfirst into the battle of a lifetime-and his chances for survival don't look good! However, DELLEC is not one to back down from a fight, even if his foe is the bloodcurdling Bludgeoner!

A completely brand new maxi-series brought to you by Aspen's own Frank Mastromauro, Vince Hernandez and Micah Gunnell, along with inker Rob Stull and colorist Matt Hollingsworth, DELLEC is unlike anything Aspen has ever done before. This inventive new title is set to raise the bar on cinematic storytelling, while keeping you on the edge of your seat every hair-raising moment.

Plus, to prove DELLEC's worth, we're introducing you to this #1 issue at our lowest price ever! So take the chance and see why DELLEC will soon be one of the most talked about new series in comics!

DETHKLOK VS. THE GOON ONE-SHOT
"In the histories of fictions there is many historious meetings . . . Frankenmasteins meets the Wolfmans . . . Scooby-Doos meets the Globetrobbers . . . and of course the Godzilla meets the little fat black kids from Diff'rent Strokes. But those are all for the douches. Now . . . we have come to make crossovers metal. Be prepareded for the most brutal meetings of alls times! Dethklok versus The Goon!"

From Eric Powell and the creators of Adult Swim's Metalocalypse: since 2006, Metalocalypse has been bringing its special brand of dark comedy to the masses through the American/Scandinavian death-metal band Dethklok. And, since 1999, The Goon has contributed the best in bucktoothed zombie brawls to the world of comics. Now, the twain shall meet . . .

Not a crossover we would have ever predicted. We hope this heralds the start of more Dethklok comics ...

INCREDIBLE HULK #600
WHO IS THE RED HULK?! THE AMAZING SPIDER-MAN IS GOING TO TRY AND FIND OUT! GREEN HULK! RED HULK! SPIDEY! SECRETS REVEALED!

A STORY SO BIG IT CAN BARELY BE CONTAINED IN THE INCREDIBLE 600TH ISSUE OF HULK! ALL THIS AND A STARTLING SURPRISE ENDING TO TOP ALL THE OTHER SHOCKING SURPRISES THIS HULK BOOK IS KNOWN FOR!

The chart-topping team of Jeph Loeb and Ed McGuinness bring you a 600th-issue celebration guest starring your friendly Neighborhood Web-Head as the original Incredible series returns! Plus, back-up story by Fred Van Lente featuring the Savage She-Hulk! And representing the first issue of the Loeb/Sale HULK: GRAY series,

Are we finally going to find out who the heck the Red Hulk is? We hope so...

MORE GOOD STUFF:

Too much notable stuff coming out this Wednesday...

We've got the second issues of the Aliens mini-series, Executive Assistant Iris, Gotham City Sirens, and Raymond Feist's Riftwar.

We've got both Emily The Strange and Lenore with new #1 issues.

Blackest Night continues with Tales of the Corps #2 and Green Lantern #44.

We're also looking forward to checking out Star Trek: Spock Reflections #1, a prequel to the latest and greatest Star Trek movie which will explain why Spock ended up living on Romulus.

Kick-Ass Movie

So Mark Millar has seen the Kick-Ass movie and claims it's the bee's knees. The man needs to dial down the hyperbole machine and get the next issue out the door.

Alien technology like the Alien Atomizer, Alien Disintegrator, and Drone Cannon make your task a little easier, while you can use the Gemini-Era Spacesuit and Samurai Armor to protect yourself from the alien hordes.

Hic Svnt Lupus

Doug ran his D&D game last night and our hearty band of adventurers set off on their quest into adulthood. After a long hike through craggy hills we discovered a pack of wolves had been stalking us for several miles. As we entered a small valley dotted with large boulders the wolves surrounded us.

Sometime later we emerged from the nearby woods, laden with bundles of wolf fur and festooned with grisly trophies. Our adventure continues. . .

In July, DC Comics gives a fresh twist to a grand comics tradition with WEDNESDAY COMICS, a new, weekly 12-issue series by some of the greatest names in comics today!

WEDNESDAY COMICS is unique in modern comics history: Reinventing the classic weekly newspaper comics section, it is a 16-page weekly that unfolds to a sprawling 28" x 20" tabloid-sized reading experience bursting with mind-blowing color, action and excitement, with each feature on its own 14" x 20" page.

Spearheaded by DCU Editorial Art Director Mark Chiarello, whose past editing credits include BATMAN BLACK and WHITE, DC: THE NEW FRONTIER and SOLO, each page of WEDNESDAY COMICS spotlights the continuing adventures of DC heroes, including:

  • BATMAN, WEDNESDAY COMICS' weekly cover feature, by the Eisner Award-winning 100 BULLETS team of writer Brian Azzarello and artist Eduardo Risso

J.H. Willaims III on Detective Comics

A great interview over at CBR where JHW III discusses the different techniques employed to make his first issue on Detective the best looking book of the year.

New Business Card

We've got a new design on our business cards. When these run out we'll have to do a 50/50 variant on the next one. Or we could do a retro card with chromium inlays.

He's an artist.

The first sentence from Todd McFarlane's introduction to his own Spawn Endgame TPB: "As I've gotten older, I've noticed that my interest in traditional, standard, superhero comics from America, have lost some of their interest for me."

The editor on this particular tome? Todd McFarlane. You can't edit yourself. It's a fact.

Kick-Ass... (sigh)

So, I was just glancing through the new Diamond Dateline and happened to notice... Kick-Ass has been pushed back once again. Kick-Ass #7 was scheduled to ship next week. Now it's ship date is 7/22/09.
