Daredevil #196 (1983)

Part of a page from Daredevil #196 (Denny O'Neil, Larry Hama [breakdowns], Klaus Janson). Always liked Klaus Janson's quirkiness. His Wolverine isn't always "on model" but its great for that reason.

RIP Rich Buckler

I was given a bunch of mid-1970s Marvel comics when I was a wee lad. They included Astonishing Tales #32 - #35, and Marvel Team-Up #46, all featuring Deathlok The Demolisher!

As far as I can recall, reading Astonshing Tales was the first time I really took note of just who was drawing the book, it was just that good, that striking. It was Rich Buckler. An amazing comic artist. RIP Mr. Buckler. -Mike

The Near-Death of Wolverine (in 1984)

The recent Death of Wolverine event featured Kitty Pryde and Wolverine reminiscing about their shared experiences. Seems unreal to see a call back so central to the relationship of these two characters that happened thirty years ago.

The mini-series Kitty Pryde and Wolverine hit the stands in the latter part of 1984. Aside from Claremont and Miller's 'Wolverine' mini-series, this was by far the coolest Wolverine joint going at the time. Claremont managed to make Kitty Pryde cool and there was all that ninja fighting action.

We had an iteration of Wolverine that wasn't nearly unstoppable, in fact a katana to the chest from a brain-washed Kitty very nearly put him down.

It also featured Wolverine entering his 'berzerker rage', something we don't see much of these days.

Kitty Pryde and Wolverine is still a fun read and if issue #3 of Death of Wolverine left you with some questions, I would recommend checking it out.

[REVIEW] BUCKY BARNES: THE WINTER SOLDIER #1

BUCKY BARNES: THE WINTER SOLDIER #1
MARVEL COMICS

WRITER: ALES KOT
ART: MARCO RUDY

The secondary purpose of the big comic events seems to be to generate some new series, and to shake up the status quo of existing series. Original Sin has yielded a new position in the Marvel U for Bucky Barnes as the "man on the wall", a position recently vacated by Nick Fury. Barnes will serve as a first line of proactive defense against the enemies of the Earth.

Barnes, ably assisted by Daisy Johnson, is essentially an intergalactic assassin, out to identify anyone or anything cogitating on doing some ill to Earth and using their one-of-a-kind super sniper rifle to give that thought the chunky salsa effect.

Pretty dark territory but Kot gives the proceedings a light comedic touch through the banter of the characters, that includes an appearance by "Imperious Sex" himself, Namor. Like most first issues there is a lot of set up. That set up is pretty vague so far but we can assume things are being set in motion that will require Barnes to line up some alien heads in his crosshairs.

This brings us to the art of the new Winter Soldier. Marco Rudy seems intent on giving every page, every splash, it's own unique design inspired by the milieu or the action in that part of the story. This is effective and beautiful in some cases, and distracting to the point of confusion in others. The underwater sequences with Namor later in the issue are particularly odd. It's doubtful that during these sequences we would be able to discern where the characters are and who they are without the accompanying captions and dialogue. This may be a bit of overreaching by the artist. As the series progresses the story and art may syncopate into something truly remarkable.

Whatever the next few issues hold for the Winter Soldier, it will certainly be an interesting departure for the character and much like the Thai-Skrull food truck fusion the characters enjoy in the story, it may surprise you by how well hard-core black ops espionage and cosmic space opera mix.

Brute Force returns in Marvel Comics' Deadpool Bi-Annual #1

Wow. Just Wow.

Deadpool Bi-Annual #1 was just released today and it is a fun read but whenever something that was best left forgotten gets resurrected it seems to access a dormant portion of my memory, releasing it's contents, like a kind of poison, into my brain. Brute Force, Protectors of the Environment (originally a four-issue mini-series from 1990) was one of those long forgotten footnotes from Marvel Comics.

On the podcast I am affiliated with, the Mission Command Podcast, we commented recently about the resurgence of the funny animal. Seems like there's something to that, as that same zeitgeist has brought about the return of the lamentable and lost Brute Force. Oh well. It was a fun story and got a few LOLs out of me. So that's something. Below are some images form the original Brute Force.

Kimota! Marvelman/Miracleman Returns!

Miracelman/Marvelman is to be *finally* reprinted next year. Miracleman, as it was known in the states, was a fantastic series written by Alan Moore and published in the states by the now defunct Eclipse Comics starting in 1985. It was all kinds of ground breaking and has been out-of-print since its original run. Thanks to the resolution of some long standing legal issues and Marvel securing the rights to Marvelman, the series can finally be reprinted and the story can be finished by Moore's successor, Neil Gaiman.

Guardians of the Galaxy casting news!

[Reposted from IC v2]

We're really excited for this movie!

Check out the movies imdb page here.
Marvel Studios is likely to reveal the entire cast of Guardians of Galaxy in a big Hall H extravaganza next week, but the movie identities of a trio of Guardians characters has reportedly been leaked to a Website in England where director James Gunn is currently filming the Marvel-based space opera that is slated to debut in theaters in a little more than a year on August 1, 2014.

According to Den of Geek, Benicio del Toro, who has signed a multi-film deal with Marvel Studios will indeed play The Collector, one of the oldest and most potent characters in the Marvel Universe.

Lee Pace will take on the role of the Kree warrior Ronan the Accuser, who began his stint in the Marvel U as a villain, but has also demonstrated an heroic side to his character.  Doctor Who alumnus Karen Gillan will, according to Den of Geek, will portray the nasty space pirate Nebula.

HeroClix: Galactic Guardians Colossals

[reposted from ICv2]

WizKids has released more images of and details about its Galactic Guardians HeroClix release, which is currently slated for early April 2012 (see "Galactic Guardians HeroClix").  This expansion for the Marvel HeroClix game includes over 40 new figures that will be available in four different booster formats: standard five-figure boosters, as well as in a ten-figure single booster release, a six-figure Fast Forces Pack, and new Super Boosters, which each contain one of six new colossal figures.

The scale of the colossal figures is quite remarkable.  Figures of the size of Galactus and Master Mold have traditionally been reserved for Con giveaways and special promotions—now for the first time WizKids is putting these massive figures in easy-to-acquire Super Booster packs that will available from all retailers who carry the HeroClix product line.
