They call it the Wilderness Years, the years between the cancellation of classic Who and the beginning of NuWho. So much of what was to inform and shape the current series of Doctor Who came out of this time. It was a time when the writers who had grown up with Doctor Who had their chances to explore the series in new ways, a chance to explore the series in a mature way, beyond the limits of a family program.
Its place we may be going back to. If ratings on Doctor Who don't improve we may find ourselves in another patch of Wilderness. Let's hope it's equally fruitful.
